But the file is small. After cropping, the leaf fills most of the screen and its outline breaks into jagged steps. Examine the leaf’s silhouette, its curve, its attachment to the stem and the vase shape. A new, distinct line may look convincing without being supported by the original file. Assess two things separately: whether the image is more usable for publication and whether the important features have survived. - **Natural texture.** Have the veins turned into a repeating pattern? Has an extra notch appeared at the edge of the leaf? - **Labels and logos.** Compare lettering with a reliable original. A neatly drawn but altered character is an error, not an improvement. - **Faces.** Check the shape of the eyes, mouth line, moles and other recognisable features. A sharper image does not necessarily preserve a person’s likeness. Do not use upscaling to decipher an illegible number or recover the exact text of a document. A plausible guess does not become a fact merely because it is easier to inspect. ## When to stop and go back to the original A little texture reinterpretation may be acceptable in a stylised plant illustration. A photograph of a rare variety, a vase catalogue or a portrait has different requirements: it depicts a specific subject. If its defining features change, find the original, take another photograph or use a looser crop. Repeatedly processing the same result only makes comparison harder. Crop the approved version and view it on a phone at the intended post size. You may find that no extra sharpness is needed and that space around the leaf matters more than fine texture.
